Save the GMail attachments to the SD-card. Tap on "Preview" button in the GMail and select "Save ..." from the list.
Works with Email app also (use "Open").

Please note: this app doesn't have a launch icon! You could open it only from your GMail app by tapping a "Preview" button

Preview? Can't see preview button on latest Gmail app maybe I need root just can't believe I can't save a simple text email to look at if I'm out of wifi range. This app obviously works for some but not unrooted N7 with JB 4.2.1 unfortunately. I will keep app in case updates improve it as it was highly recommend by many online.

Not good enough Only works for "Preview" and not "Download", so you can only save the small thumbnail version of attached images. This is not very useful IMHO.
