ThunderHunter is using well known physical characteristics of sound and light to count how far thunder-bolt strikes from you. The application will even show you thunder-bolt stroke position on the google maps.

We had some thunder storms this past weekend in Connecticut. This app didn't work at all. LOL. It's pretty cool tho if it worked. Kids love it.
